Rick Trolsen – Trombone

Rick arrived in New Orleans in 1982, after attending Berklee College of Music. He quickly fell into good company, namely the world-renowned saxophonist, Al Belletto; and was adopted as the first call sideman in town. He leads the jazz/rock group ”Neslort” as a vehicle for his original compositions. A perennial favorite for 3 consecutive years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, “Neslort” has featured some of the finest musicians in town, and has released 3 CD’s.
In 2003, Rick traveled to Rio de Janeiro to record “Gringo Do Choro”, which features primarily Choro music from the early part of the 20th century. It wasn’t until after hurricane Katrina that he recorded the traditional music of New Orleans. In 2006 & 2007, he released “New Orleans Lullaby” and “Sunrise on Bourbon Street.”
Then, in 2011, he recorded yet another CD featuring Neslort entitled “Mystical Scam.” His traditional group “The New Orleans Po’Boys”, will release it’s 1st CD in October 2013, featuring an even mix of traditional New Orleans’ favorites and his original compositions.

As a freelance trombonist Rick has enjoyed featured performances with all walks of the local music life, and has proved Rick to be versatile and at ease with contemporary and traditional jazz, blues, reggae, big bands, show music, avante garde, and club dates. Performances and/or recordings include Dr.John, Clarence”Gatemouth” Brown, Joe Sample and the Crusaders, Gino Vannelli, Earl King, Marva Wright, Allen Toussaint, Al Hirt, The Dukes of Dixieland, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Henry Mancini, Rosemary Clooney, Bonerama, Stan Musial, The Woody Herman Band, The Temptations, Al Grey, Barry Manilow, Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, The Four Tops, Doc Severinsen, Johnny Cash, Harry Connick Jr., the CAC Jazz Orchestra, directed by Ellis Marsalis and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra directed by Irvin Mayfield, as well as many others that he doesn’t care to mention.

Dogs

It’s Sunday again, and I find myself rejoicing in the arrival of cooler weather here in New Orleans. I also find myself in similar moments of rejoicing uttering “Graças a Deus.” I learned to say this while I was in Brasil years ago, and now I find it a regular part of my vocabulary.

I have an aversion to the word “god.” It doesn’t sound godly at all to my ears. After all, written backwards it does read “dog.” I see dogs as more “godly” than gods. Gods seem to get in the way of humanity where dogs aptly fit in and are essential parts to our being. I can’t remember a war that brought on by dogs. Conflicts, sure; but not all out wars. Just the word “god” is so un-poetic. If we all acted like dogs, the world would undoubtedly be a better place. Graças a Deus para cães.

Threadheads

Wow, I know its already Thursday, but I have a moment to reflect on this past weekend when I had the opportunity to hang with some “Threadheads.” Yea, the people who participate generously to support New Orleans music and New Orleans musicians. They do it because they like what we do here, and they like New Orleans. They gain nothing except satisfaction, new friends, and good times. It sure was great to meet the people that have helped produce our effort, “Mystical Scam.” It’s encouraging to see such a grassroots organization achieve great success!

Oh by the way, I forgot to mention….

“Mystical Scam” is now available everywhere! Drop what you are doing, and go buy a copy of it today. I can promise that you will feel better after listening to it!

New Orleans, LA – 08/31/10

Mystical Scam, our new CD dedicated to all of the organizations, religious or not, that promise us wealth, health, happiness, 20 virgins awaiting us in heaven after we kill 3000 people and the such… is in printing now! Our projected release will be in October.

The 10 songs recorded are killing!

Stay tuned for further news.

New Neslort Recording in post production!

That’s right folks, we finally got into the studio. 3 days of recording, trying our best NOT to get it perfect, very little makeup was applied. We like it raw, like our oysters, eerrp, well, like we used to like them. Included on the CD will be some video of us performing. So right now, we’re putting the package together. Lot’s of team work going on, Rick Olivier on the still photos, Richard Thompson on the video, Misha Kachkachishvili engineering the sound, and my favorite “Threadhead,” Michael Tomb on the CD design. Me??? I’m working nights washing windows at the Entergy building trying to pay all this off! At least it’s cool way up there!

OK, so I have started “blogging.” Let’s see how much bullshit I can come up with as time marches on. Oh, by the way, is it ok to use “naughty” words in one’s own blog? I hope the fuck so, cause if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s censorship. And that’s a subject I will address in my next blog. There’s a soapbox I will willingly stand on!

I hope someone actually reads this…..or not.

I will close with this bit of wisdom…..SECURITY BREEDS INSECURITY!
